Oxford Circus Octopus Causes Traffic Chaos

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 03 Juni 2014 | 23.17

A giant octopus has blocked roads and caused traffic chaos during the morning rush hour in Britain's busiest shopping district.

Bemused commuters snapped pictures of the polystyrene beast, which was on the back of a lorry which broke down in the middle of the diagonal crossing at the Oxford Circus junction.

Transport for London (TfL) tweeted a picture of the eight-legged obstruction just after 9am, saying: "A lorry carrying an octopus has broken down at Oxford Circus. Approach with care."

Later, TfL confirmed the lorry had been moved and was blocking a lane on Regent Street.

The octopus caused traffic jams around Oxford Street, one of London's most popular tourist destinations, with more than 200 million visitors per year.

The lorry's owner - transport company Roman Self Drive - also took to Twitter and said: "He's no Paul the Octopus, but he's been causing ripples with the London traffic."

The company said it thought the creature was part of a World Cup related publicity stunt by a betting company.

The driver Ala Miah told Sky News he had been hired to take the octopus from Peckham to Hammersmith.

He said the location of the breakdown was an unfortunate coincidence and he had managed to restart the lorry and carry on with his journey.

He told Sky: "Would I stop the lorry at 8.10am in the middle of Oxford Circus? Are you joking?

"The engine just cut out and then while I was waiting for my breakdown guys to arrive I tried the key in the ignition after 20 minutes and got it going again.

"I'm really sorry to anyone who was inconvenienced this morning."

Pensioner 'Eaten Alive' By Dog: Women Jailed

Two women have been jailed for 12 months each after 79-year-old Clifford Clarke was "literally eaten alive" by their dog.

Hayley Sulley, 30, and Della Woods, 29, wept in the dock at Liverpool Crown Court as they were handed the sentence.

Judge Mark Brown told the women that Mr Clarke's death had been "entirely avoidable".

"Mr Clarke was literally eaten alive when large amounts of tissue were ingested by the dog and that is a very shocking, appalling and tragic event," the judge said.

"It is very fortunate that nobody else was seriously hurt because the dog was completely out of control and extremely dangerous."

Clifford Clarke death Woods (left) and Sulley (right) pleaded guilty last month

The two women, who are both mothers, pleaded guilty last month to an offence under the Dangerous Dogs Act of allowing a dog to enter a place where it was not allowed to be and where it attacked a person.

The court heard that the presa canario cross-breed had not been fed for at least 45 hours before the attack.

The dog, called Charlie, escaped with another of the pair's dogs from their garden in Richard Kelly Close in the Norris Green area of Liverpool in May 2013.

Prosecutor Eric Lamb said a witness described seeing both dogs run up to a house backing on to Mr Clarke's property.

Mr Lamb said: "The dogs were jumping up at the window. Charlie was foaming at the mouth.

"Both of the dogs appeared very hungry."

He said they were seen eating bird food and dirty water from a bowl containing cigarette butts.

A short time later the dogs broke into the garden of the retired hospital porter.

He had opened his back door while cooking a meal.

The court heard how the dog sank its teeth into Mr Clarke's arm and dragged the OAP around the garden as helpless neighbours looked on.

One of his arms was effectively chewed off, while the other was severely wounded, the court heard.

Mr Clarke died of multiple injuries and blood loss.

An armed unit was called to the scene to euthanise the dog after it attacked police officers who were alerted by neighbours.

It was said to have jumped up at the 6ft wooden fence and bitten the end of an officer's rifle.

The dog had to be shot twice before it was killed.

Judge Brown said that many witnesses to the tragedy had suffered psychological trauma.

He also noted that the defendants' garden was in an unkempt state with bottles of alcohol strewn across it.

Both Sulley and Woods wrote a letter to the judge in which they expressed their shame, sadness and "genuine remorse".

The pair were banned from keeping dogs for life, and the women's other dogs have been rehomed.

The judge said the defendants were lucky to have avoided a manslaughter charge.

Since the attack new legislation has been introduced which increases the maximum sentence for fatal dog attacks from two years to 14 years in prison.

The judge said the change did not apply in this case as it could not be used retrospectively.

Essex Park Stabbing: Two Men Arrested

Two men are being held in connection with the death of a vulnerable man found in a park in Essex.

James Attfield, 33, who had a brain injury after being hit by a car four years ago, was found dead near Castle Park in Colchester in the early hours of the morning on March 29.

A post-mortem examination found he had been stabbed more than 100 times.

The victim, known as Jim to his family, had wounds on his arms, hands, back, neck and head, police revealed.

Mr Attfield had been seen at a local pub, the River Lodge, in the hours before his death.

James Attfield showed on CCTV before his death Mr Attfield on CCTV in a pub in the hours before his death

The two men, both aged 33, being held in connection with Mr Attfield's death have also been arrested on suspicion of involvement in another attack on a footpath in Colchester at around 2am on Saturday.

Mr Attfield, a father-of-five, was described by his mother, Julie Finch, as a "bit of a loner" who was "in the process of rebuilding his life" when he died.

She said the effects of the traffic accident had left her son "with a weakness to the left side of his body which in turn affected his balance".

"His speech was also slightly affected and he suffered short-term memory loss, and these things obviously made him very vulnerable," she said.

"Jim was very aware of his disabilities and avoided crowded places and situations where he could get injured again."

She added: "Jim was well-liked and polite - everyone always had a good word to say about him."

Europe Calls On UK Govt To Increase Taxes

The European Commission has urged the UK Government to raise taxes and rein in its Help To Buy scheme.

The European Union's executive body called on the Government to increase the amount it collects in taxes to help it cut the deficit, saying policy had so far been "heavily skewed" to spending cuts.

Setting out their 2014 economic policy recommendations for the UK, commissioners said the coalition should be "prioritising capital expenditure" to boost the "fragile" recovery.

Many of the recommendations concern the housing market, including a call for more houses to be built and for adjustments to Help To Buy, which many have warned is causing a potentially damaging housing bubble.

A report from Nationwide released on Tuesday showed house prices had risen for the 13th month in a row.

Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron attends the launch of his Conservative Party's election poster for the European elections in the car park at a rugby club in Chippenham Mr Cameron has said the EU is "too bossy"

The "regressive" council tax system was also in the Commission's sights.

The Commission said: "At the moment, increasing property values are not translated into higher property taxes as the property value roll has not been updated since 1991 and taxes on higher value property are lower than on lower value property in relative terms due to the regressivity of the current rates and bands within the council tax system."

The Commission broadly praised action on extending childcare provision and reforming welfare, but said more must be done on apprenticeships and skills.

Recommendations on economic policy have been made for all countries. It comes after the European elections were dominated by anti-EU sentiment, with people protesting about the powers of the unelected European Commission.

Prime Minister David Cameron described the EU as "too big, too bossy, too interfering" last week, but a Treasury spokesman said the recommendations were "in line" with the Government's approach.

Mr Cameron is currently battling moves to appoint arch federalist Jean-Claude Juncker to president of the Commission, as he tries to renegotiate Britain's deal with the EU.

The Prime Minister reportedly warned at the weekend that the UK could quit the union if Mr Juncker was appointed.

The Commission's economic suggestions have provoked anger among politicians and some campaigners.

Matthew Elliott, chief executive of Business for Britain, said: "This is further evidence that the EU should be let nowhere near tax policy of its member states.

"Leaders in Brussels appear not have taken on board the resounding message from the recent elections that Britain wants less interference from the continent, not more."

A Treasury spokesman said: "The Government's long-term economic plan is working, delivering economic security for hardworking people.

"The European Commission continues to support the UK Government's strategy including its commitment to deficit reduction. The Commission's recommendations are in line with the Government's approach."

Mortgage Rules 'Hit Housing Market Activity'

UK house prices have risen for the thirteenth month in a row but activity may be slowing as greater restrictions are placed on mortgage lending.

The findings, released by Nationwide in its monthly house price index, recorded a 0.7% increase in average prices in May.

Nationwide said it meant that the annual pace of price growth edged up to 11.1% from 10.9% the previous month - its strongest level since June 2007 - with first-time buyers driving the recovery.

The report was released against a backdrop of fierce debate about whether the market is overheating - particularly in London.

British Business Secretary Vince Cable Mr Cable will hold talks with housebuilders on Tuesday

Sky News learned on Monday that the Business Secretary Vince Cable and the Chancellor were separately to meet the bosses of major building firms this week over the continuing problem of historically low supply failing to meet the need for new homes.

Separate figures released on Tuesday morning also raised fears the housing industry was struggling to rebuild itself in the wake of the financial crisis to match demand, with activity in the construction sector measured by Markit at a seven-month low in May.

The European Union also called on the UK to build more properties to help stabilise the market.

Nationwide said it believed the biggest factor behind the steep rise in property prices was the improving economy.

Its chief economist Robert Gardner said: "There have been tentative signs that activity in the housing market may be starting to moderate, with mortgage approvals in April around 17% below January's high.

"It is too early to say whether nationally this is indicative of a cooling trend in the wider market.

"The slowdown may partly be the result of the introduction of Mortgage Market Review (MMR) measures, which may take a few months to bed down.

"The underlying pace of activity should become more evident as we move through the summer months and the impact of MMR becomes clearer.

Ian King Live

"However, with mortgage rates close to all-time lows and labour market conditions continuing to improve, underlying demand for homes is likely to remain strong."

Nationwide believed first-time buyers were driving the recovery, though the controversial Help to Buy scheme was unlikely to be the biggest factor behind the surge.

Mr Gardner continued: "First-time buyers accounted for 48% of house purchase activity in March, a record high well above the long run average of 38%.

"Data from DCLG suggests that the Help to Buy scheme is providing support to first time buyers, who accounted for over 80% of Help to Buy loans to date.

"However, the modest numbers involved so far suggest that Help to Buy is unlikely to be the main factor behind the recent pickup in the wider housing market."

Rolf Harris Would 'Run Away From Giggling Girls'

By Nick Pisa, Sky News Reporter, at Southwark Crown Court

Entertainer Rolf Harris was ''tactile'' and admired ''the lovely curves'' of a teenage girl, a court has heard.

Harris, 84, would also "run away from giggling girls" and drove one teenager ''nuts'' as he kept asking her: "When are you going to marry me?"

The details emerged from defence witnesses as the trial continues against the Australian-born singer, who is accused of indecently assaulting four women.

Joanne Charles, daughter of 1970s singer Don Charles, was asked to describe Harris by his defence barrister Sonia Woodley QC.

Ms Charles said: ''He's lovely, he's quite kind, a real softie. He's great. He's very tactile... he's a great hugger, he gives great bear hugs.''

When asked if they were ever in a sexual manner, she replied: "No, absolutely not."

Ms Charles added that as a teenager when she met Harris he would say: ''Goodness, you have such lovely curves. You are a lovely girl.''

Ms Woodley asked her if it was in a lurid way and she replied: "No, friendly, warm way."

Ms Charles added that when she visited Harris at his home he would often ''run away from giggling girls''.

Under cross examination by prosecutor Sasha Wass QC, Ms Charles was asked what her reaction had been to the news Harris had an affair with his best friend's daughter.

She replied: ''I was saddened, shocked.'' She went on: ''It's terribly sad." She added people had affairs all the time.

Ms Wass said: ''Yes but this was with his daughter's best friend - do you not think that's different?''

Ms Charles replied: ''It is very sad but I'm not sure it is.''

Another witness, physiotherapist Anne Marie Ashford Eve, told the court Harris would ''envelop her and her father in bear hugs''.

She added: ''There was also a 'Rolfism'. He would say, 'when are you going to marry me?' It would drive me nuts. It was a joke but I found it irritating.

''It was embarrassing, but as a teenager grown-ups are embarrassing when you are a teenager.''

Rosemarie Ford, ex-presenter on TV show Generation Game, also gave evidence and told the court he was a ''total professional'' who had a "great warmth about him".

She added that in the entertainment world it was common for people to ''demonstrate affection towards each other''.

Ms Ford, married to actor Robert Lindsay, said: ''We always greet each other with hugs and kisses... someone lingering would be recognised but Rolf was always proper, it was always in an appropriate manner.''

Ms Wass declined to cross-examine her after Ms Ford told the court she knew ''nothing about his private life''.

Harris, of Bray, Berkshire, denies 12 counts of indecent assault on four women aged between seven and eight years old and 19 years old between 1968 and 1986.

The trial at Southwark Crown Court continues.

Naked Body On Beach Mystery: New CCTV Video

Police investigating the death of man found naked and with headphones and a sock in his mouth have released CCTV video of him on the night before his body was discovered.

Officers are hoping the new footage will jog the memories of people who were in Newquay and Perranporth, Cornwall, at the same time and who may remember seeing Alan Jeal.

The 64-year-old's body was found on Perranporth beach on Tuesday February 25, 2014 by a member of the public while out walking his dog around 2pm.

He was naked apart from wearing socks and one walking shoe.

Mr Jeal, who had a set of headphones and a rolled-up sock in his mouth, had multiple injuries to his chest, head and hand.

The white Apple iPhone or iPod style headphones, with volume control, were looped around the back of the sock and were trailing out of his mouth.

Police CCTV Mr Jeal pictured in Marcus Hill, Newquay

There were some signs of possible drowning but it has not been confirmed as the cause of death.

Police originally thought Mr Jeal had caught the bus from Truro to Perranporth on the evening of February 24, but the latest CCTV shows him in Newquay before taking a bus to Perranporth.

He had caught a bus from the Lemon Quay, Truro, to Newquay at around 6.50pm. Previously released CCTV footage shows him waiting with three other people at a bus stop but these people have not been traced.

In the latest video, he is seen getting off a bus at Newquay bus station at 8.16pm on the Monday and walking around the town centre, before returning to the bus station at 9pm.

He then caught the 9.15pm bus to Perranporth.

Mr Jeal is also captured on CCTV in Perranporth between 10.25pm and 10.27pm.

The light blue rain coat he was seen wearing in Truro on the Monday has not been found. The navy Regatta jacket found on the beach is thought to be different to the one he was seen wearing in the CCTV images.

Police CCTVPolice CCTV Mr Jeal had bought a weighted training vest and ankle weights

Some of his other belongings are still missing, including a Barclays Bank current account card, a Barclaycard credit card, a Nokia 1110i mobile phone, a third generation iPod shuffle and the rest of the clothing he was wearing.

Mr Jeal, who lived alone in Wadebridge, had recently bought a 10kg weighted training vest and 2kg ankle weights but they have not been located.

Detectives are trying to establish whether they were bought for him to wear or whether he bought them for another reason such as a gift for someone else.

Anyone with any information that could assist with the investigation is asked to contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111, quoting reference 381 of 1 March 2014.
