DLT Jury Told It Should Consider The Evidence

The jury in the trial of Dave Lee Travis has been told it should consider the evidence in the case, not whether the allegations are serious enough to be prosecuted.

The DJ is charged with two counts of indecent assault and one of sexual assault between 1990 and 2008, which he denies.

He was acquitted of a number of similar offences at a trial earlier this year.

The Crown's barrister Miranda Moore QC told the jury in her closing speech that it doesn't matter that the allegations were not the most serious that courts had to deal with.

"It's not for you to judge degrees of guilty. 'Is it serious enough?' is not something you have to worry about," she said.

"If the lady is telling the truth, that is this offence. You judge the evidence. If it is not serious enough, you wouldn't be trying it."

She denied that the women who came forward were "publicity-seeking money grabbers".

Ms Moore said: "They have retained their anonymity. There is no evidence that any of them have any desire to sell their story.

"These are understated allegations by women who are actually telling the truth."

She denied that Operation Yewtree was a "witch hunt", saying: "Don't ask why are we trying something that could have been dealt with by a slap in the face?  Attitudes have changed."

Earlier, a TV personality who claimed Travis grabbed her breasts was recalled to give more evidence.

The woman worked on the Mrs Merton show in 1995.

In her earlier testimony she described how she was smoking in a corridor in the BBC Manchester studios where the programme was recorded.

She said that Travis, who was a guest on the spoof chat show, approached her and said: "You mustn't smoke.  Think of you poor little lungs."

The witness said that the DJ then grabbed her breasts for between 10 to 15 seconds.

The DJ's barrister Steven Vullo QC asked the woman to return to court to answer questions, after establishing that the BBC had a non-smoking policy in place during the 1990s.

The witness said that people did smoke near the studios because both Caroline Ahern, the star and writer of the show, as well as many of her celebrity guests were smokers.

The trial also heard from a producer of the pantomime at which DLT is alleged to have groped an assistant stage manager.

Nicholas Thomas described how the DJ was an "exemplary" employee who had appeared in five of his shows over the years.

He had contacted Mr Travis's solicitor of his own volition when he read about the accusation in the newspapers.

"I am aware of the allegation. It is complete nonsense," he told the jury.
