Police searching for a schoolgirl last seen getting into difficulty in waters off a busy holiday resort have insisted the hunt for her is not over.
Holly McClymont, 14, from Glasgow, was last seen swimming in the sea off Barry Island in South Wales.
Coastguards on Monday night said they had "exhausted" their efforts trying to find the St Thomas Aquinas Secondary school pupil and had handed the investigation over to the police.
Officers said the search operation was continuing and that efforts would be focused along the coastline.
"There have been no further confirmed sightings of Holly since she was last seen getting into difficulty," a South Wales Police spokesman said.
The sea off Barry is not always as calm as it looks "Specialist search teams will continue their efforts on foot and at sea focusing on the Barry coastline.
"Although the coastguards' role in the search has now been scaled down, they are still on standby and we would of course call on their services if required."
Holly was on holiday with her mother, Sarah, and other relatives.
Her family are "sick with worry", a cousin said.
The major search operation was sparked just after 3.45pm on Sunday after she had been seen in the waters off Whitmore Bay, an hour after Holly was last seen.
Swansea Coastguard rescue manager Steve Jones said teams had been "dumbfounded" at how much time had elapsed before the youngster was reported missing.
He added: "If you see someone in difficulty in the water you should call 999 and ask for the coastguard immediately. Any delay means vital search and rescue time is lost.
